Living and Learning Communities

Finding your niche on a large campus can be challenging. Living Learning Communities (LLC) offer you the instant benefit of living with others who share your interests or major. The communities are designed to be places where students easily make friends and excel academically. If you would like to join any of these communities, simply indicate this preference on your Housing Agreement.

Architecture + The Arts Community

Students from the College of Architecture + the Arts are encouraged to live in the Architecture and Arts Community in Lakeview Hall South, where FIU faculty and Residential Life staff work together to provide students with special programming, events, and the convenience of living in close proximity with other students who share the same major and interests. Students will benefit from the interactions with their peers and faculty, and opportunity to be more involved in their college.

First Year Residents Succeeding Together (FYRST)

FYRST helps students acclimate to university in a fun and supportive environment. Participants can also take the required Freshmen Experience class right in the residence hall and have easy access to student and faculty mentors. Community service opportunities and a variety of programs and workshops enable students to meet one another, get involved in the university community, and gain important skills in and out of the classroom. This special community for first year students is located in Panther Hall and Lakeview Village at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus and Bay Vista Housing at Biscayne Bay Campus.

FYRST Community Service

Partnering with the Center for Leadership & Service and the College of Social Work, Housing and Residential Life brings first-year students a Living Learning Community that will explore global issues and knowledge of diversity and injustice and develop students’ awareness and responsibility toward service and civic engagement. The community brings together faculty and students across a variety of disciplines in order to examine issues of injustice. This program is available to first-year students in Panther Hall at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

FYRST Wellness

Housing and Residential Life has partnered with Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health Services, Recreation Services and various academic departments to bring first-year residents a Living Learning Community that offers multiple opportunities to improve health, have fun, and build connectinons with peers. This community brings together faculty, staff and students focused on health and wellness programs and interactive experiences. The program will examine the broad range of factors that contribute to achieving optimal health. FYRST Wellness is available to first-year students in Panther Hall at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

Global Living Learning Community

This community is a collaboration between Housing and Residential Life, the Center for Leadership and Service and various other offices at FIU that are invested in global learning. This unique living/learning experience educates students for global leadership and engagement. The goal of this program is to help residents become citizens of the world. We bring the world into the community through intercultural awareness, leadership development and experiential learning. Global Community residents participate in numerous activities to explore current world events and international perspectives as they prepare for leadership roles as active global citizens. The goal of the program is to develop globally competent leaders who accept responsibility for active, world citizenship. This program is available to residents who reside in Everglades Hall at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

Honors Place

All Honors College students are encouraged to live in Honors Place located in Everglades Hall at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. FIU faculty and Residential Life staff work together to provide a special experience for Honors Students, including various community service projects, study group sessions, and a variety of workshops and social programs unique to the Honors College.

Law Community

This community is a collaboration between Housing and Residential Life and the College of Law. Students enrolled in the College of Law have a unique opportunity to live together in FIU’s newest residence hall, Parkview Hall. Individuals in the program interact with faculty and staff mentors who are committed to helping law students succeed. This community supports the College of Law’s mission in preparing students for the ethical and effective general practice of law, community service, and international and comparative law.

Wellness II

This Living Learning Community is an extension of FYRST Wellness geared more toward students beyond their first year of college. This Living Learning Community in University Towers will provide students unique opportunities to discuss the various dimensions of wellness and to improve health while having fun. Although open to any students it is highly recommended for students looking to major in a health specific or medical related field.
